               CAMP SHALOM

Camp Shalom is a well established recreational day camp for children and young adults with developmental delays. Camp Shalom serves children as young as three years of age and young adults in their twenties. Camp is held at the Bergen County Y, a Jewish Community Center on Pascack Road in our modern, air conditioned and barrier free facility.  More...

The campers who participate in Camp Shalom have any variety of disabilities for example; Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Downs Syndrome, Apraxia, Emotional Disorders, PDD, ADHD, children with chronic conditions as well as children who are recovering or rehabilitating.

The camp’s staff is comprised of volunteers, counselors, teachers and therapists work with children with a full range of disabilities. There is a camp director who is assisted by a program manager. Specialists in art, music and physical education . All of the specialties and activities are adaptive.

The program is staffed one on one so that each camper has a counselor of their own. The relationship between camper and counselor is paramount and it is our hope that the counselors learn the nuances of their campers. Since many of the campers are non verbal we find this an effective way to share what is going on at camp with home and encourage parents to keep us in the loop about changes in the home routine which may impact their child’s mood or behavoir . At the end of each week there is a newsletter sent home highlighting the weeks activities at camp.

Camp Shalom is a half day program from 1:00-5:00 PM on Monday through Thursday and till 4:00 PM on Friday. An optional lunch hour supervised by counselors is offered at an additional charge. The YJCC observes Kashruth so food brought from home must be a kosher dairy lunch. Counselors will also gladly assist campers with purchasing lunch from the snack bar which is also dairy. No food brought from home is allowed in the snack bar. If you are unfamiliar with foods and food combinations that are kosher we can provide suggestions. Transportation can be arranged with a private van service but it is costly and does not have a wheelchair ramp.

The daily activities at camp are music and art therapy, adaptive phys ed and aquatics and snack time. Careful attention is paid to allergies and some children do bring snack from home. We have weekly specials that are included in the camp tuition ie ;therapeutic riding, horsemanship and therapeutic martial arts. In addition to the regular art and music activities, special programs and events like weaving, pottery and a variety of musical entertainment enrich the camp experience. We are exploring yoga and nature as some possible additions for this coming season. Last summer Camp Shalom had it’s own Very Special Arts Festival. The campers were excited to have different art experiences and their work was displayed along with photographs of the actual workshops which demonstrated the process. We proudly displayed the work and the campers greeted their guests.

The related services of speech, physical and occupational therapies are also offered at an additional cost. These services are provided by Shelli Danski and Associates and are billed directly through their office.  More...

Camp Shalom offers a summer experience filled with recreation, activities, support, socialization, companionship for its campers and respite for parents. What a wonderful feeling it is to drop off your child and be confident that he or she is being cared for and stimulated in such a safe and nurturing environment.
